John Holcomb Biography

John Holcomb is an American journalist who plays a pivotal role as Sports Director of the News On 6 Sports’ team. He is currently working with the News 9 sports team.

Holcomb attended Oklahoma Baptist University on a basketball scholarship, graduating with a degree in journalism in May 1988.

John Holcomb Career

Holcomb began his career at KOTV in November 1995, and since September 1999, Holcomb has anchored the weeknight sportscasts for The News On 6 at 6 and 10 p.m.

He also co-hosts the “Oklahoma Sports Blitz” statewide along with Oklahoma City Sports Director, Dean Blevins, Sunday nights immediately following the local news on both The News On 6 and NEWS 9. During high school football season, Holcomb also anchors “Friday Football Blitz,” Tulsa’s high school football show.

He worked at radio station KGFF in Shawnee and at the Oklahoma News Network before becoming a news reporter at KXII-TV in Sherman, Texas in 1989. From there, he moved to KSWO-TV in Lawton to work as a weekend sports anchor in April 1991. In January 1993, he was named sports director at KFDA-TV in Amarillo, Texas.

Today, Holcomb is entering his 13th season as the radio color analyst for OSU football, and his 11th season as the analyst for OSU men’s basketball on the Cowboy Sports Network. He has also done play-by-play work for Cox high school football and basketball broadcasts.

Holcomb was named the Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year in 2001, 2002 and 2011 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Holcomb loves basketball, golf, tennis, and, in his words, “about anything else that requires some coordination without total physical exhaustion.” He says, “My wife, Jeanna, and I fell in love with northeastern Oklahoma and the people who live here. It’s really a privilege to work in an area of the country where there are such quality people who just happen to be so passionate about sports.”

The Holcombs have two daughters, Melody and Maggie, and are members of New Beginnings Church in Bixby.

John Holcomb Freak Accident Leads To Life-Saving Cancer Discovery For Young Golfer

Edmond Golfer Sam Humphreys says it was a freak accident on the golf course that led to his cancer discovery. The college senior says his 9-iron saved his life.

“I was hitting balls with my dad out on the range at National,” Sam said. “Basically, a club was on the ground, and I stepped on it.”

Since a young age, Sam has always loved golf, and he has the hardware to prove he’s defeated some tough courses: a case full of state rings. However, Sam and his dad, Sports Animal Radio host Craig Humphreys say they never saw coming to the life-changing events that unfolded this past summer.

“So, I backed the golf cart up about 10 feet and when I did, I laid the club up against the cart,” added Craig Humphreys, Sam’s dad.

“The club fell off against the golf cart. So as young kids do, he doesn’t bend over to pick up the club. He just steps on the clubface and when he did that, the grip end of the club comes up and hits him in a bad spot.”

“It actually hit me right in the tumor, and it was on the right testicle and it traumatized the tumor and gave me pain,” Sam said. “It was definitely like a God thing.”

The 23-year-old competitor found himself at the Stephenson Cancer Center with stage two testicular cancer that spread to the lymph nodes. Surgery was the first tough round, then three months of grueling chemo. Sam tackled the “course of cancer” like a golf round, one shot at a time until he had a revelation.

“That you don’t have to stop living when you have cancer; it’s just cancer, you know,” he said. “So, I wake up with the ‘why’ of kind of trying to inspire positivity whether people are going through way harder things than me.”

A young man clinging deep to his faith, family and the encouragement from others to get him through the storm. From cards, texts, social media, friends, and strangers have all shown Sam so much, love. However, the one thing he had to surrender in the fight, playing fall golf with his college teammates.
